Rus Wornom, a freelance writer with many years of experience in the newspaper industry, joins me to talk about the grim state of newspapers today. It’s something that is affecting anyone who works in print as a cartoonist or writer, as we’re in a very unstable and changing time. Rus brings his vaulable insight to the table, having written for newspapers, magazines, blogs, and several published novels. He’s been right in the middle of the editorial/business end of things, and what he has to say is truly illuminating. We try to see what the future holds, and it’s not all doom and gloom!
Also, I announce the very first sponsor for Tall Tale Radio, the mighty KeenSpot. I’m proud to have them on board, so check out their amazing comics, and if you’re a creator, you’ll want to look at their free comics hosting site, Comics Genesis.
All that and Tall Tale Features news, too!

Had a great time listening Tom! Thanks. As an aspiring cartoonist, I find myself wondering if comics can really save newspapers, because that’s the first section I always read and I’m sure if they added alot more comics it would attract a new generation of people, younger perhaps. I think if newspapers go local then, like you said yourself, it would work better. Going local would probably be alot better for comics aswell, more newspapers, more each comic the newspapers will be in. I’d just love to fast forward 50 years in time and see how the newspaper situation is, maybe newspapers have got back on their feet or maybe it’s totally different but also working.
Anyway thanks again Tom.
Dang, that’s two episodes in a row now where things were being discussed way outside my area of expertise and I was riveted. Tom, you just keep topping yourself. Fascinating perspective on the newspaper issue from Mr. Wornom. I hope they don’t go away. I’m still a subscriber.
Joe! Yer preachin’ to the choir, brutha. I would like to see at least one newspaper take the comics plunge and see what happens. Like we say, people read the comics, the sports, and the obits. So, obviously we need more cartoons, more local sports coverage and…dead people, I guess. Zombies! Zombies are the future of newspapers!
Brock! Always a pleasure, amigo. The death knell of newspapers affects us all, so hopefully they’re just going into a coma.
